Getting Creative - by Grace Tisone

The picture is the cover of one of the social media posts that I made for the Extension Facebook and Instagram page.

One of the large projects I am involved in deals with industrial hemp research that is going on at the Wye Research and Education center. There is currently an ongoing planting date study as well as a variety trial  for the hemp that I get to be involved in. In efforts to increase awareness about the research that is being done through extension about hemp, and also to increase overall knowledge of growing hemp in Maryland, I have been working on creating infographics and social media posts that will go onto the UMD extension social media pages. These posts contain information about growing hemp in Maryland, and are aimed at farmers or potential producers who want to learn more about industrial hemp production. A large part of this project has been planning and designing the format of the posts, picking imagery and creating visually appealing infographics to display the information on. I have really enjoyed this aspect of the project as it is really enjoyable being able to have the creative freedom to design something completely on my own.

A large part of this project includes collecting information by reading through factsheets and research articles. There are a lot of pieces of media that I have been able to read through and collect information to use on the social media posts. The biggest aspect of this project is taking the information that comes from those resources, which in some cases are dense research papers, and condensing it down into material that is easy to understand and thought-provoking to read. This part of the project requires a lot of critical thinking because I have to think about who the intended audience is, what their knowledge of the subject is, what their level of education is, and what information they would find useful. I also have to plan out what information should go together and how to separate out the information for the hemp posts to make it coherent and have a nice flow. Altogether, this part of the project tends to be more challenging and require more critical thinking because I have to understand how to communicate very dense information in a simplified way.
