Me working with some of the campers during gardening class. We had dissected some flowers to identify some of the different parts.
Week number four has been a fun and exciting time during my internship. This week, I have been helping with the St. Mary’s County 4-H Day camp, where kids from different 4-H clubs in the county come to have fun and participate in different activities such as air rifle, cooking, gardening, archery, arts, and crafts and much more. I even had the chance to teach the gardening class and helped the kids evaluate their own soil samples from home. We evaluated pH, nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. I have learned to adapt a bit, to the way that the camp is set up and the different rotations of classes. I went through a different camp program in Charles County, but I did find it interesting looking at the differences and similarities between the two. I am going with my home county in a couple of weeks to their overnight camp in western Maryland. I am looking forward to going since I did not get to go to my last year of 4-H due to Covid. In addition to camp activities, I have also harvested tomatoes in our high tunnel at the office this week. These tomatoes were heirloom varieties from our trial, and I counted all the tomatoes that came from each plot (3 plants in each plot, four plots of the same variety). I then measured and divided them based on size, weighed them, and recorded the data.
I think in terms of using critical thinking during my time as an intern, this week was a perfect time to do so. I felt myself thinking on my feet and just observing the patterns and the different behaviors each camper exhibited. I could tell that the 4-H campers had more fun making their own activities. The big games they played were four square and nine square in the air and they enjoyed the water activities such as a water-balloon toss and battleship. Snack time and free time were what they looked forward to the most, so keeping them focused and entertained was one of the biggest challenges, especially during the soil testing class and gardening activities. I am looking forward to ending this camp week on a high note and I am hoping that I can provide insight for suggestions for next year’s camp.
