Me standing next to the hemp from the very first planting date, it's over 5 feet tall now!
Now that I am about halfway through this internship, I have been able to learn a lot about my personal work style and what I enjoy doing. One of the biggest things that I have learned about myself is that I thrive when there is diversity in what I am doing. One of my favorite things about this internship is that no day looks exactly the same. Some days I am out in the fields working collaboratively with other people, and other days I am working independently on projects from home. This week involved one day of going out to the fields to plant the second to last of the hemp planting date trial seeds. On planting days, there is involvement from a lot of people to work the equipment and assure that the plantings are being done according to the plot plans. After planting the hemp, we also went around to some of the other research fields to inspect a few of the different studies that are happening at the Wye. I’ve learned that I really enjoy the days that I get to spend out in the field, as being able to see the progress with research feels extremely rewarding and it’s always exciting to see how much the plants have grown.
As much as I enjoy working in the field and collaborating with other people, I’ve realized that I tend to work most efficiently when I can work by myself. The rest of this week involved some planning for the hemp tour that is happening at the end of July. A lot of the work that I am doing includes creating infographics and advertisements to spread information about growing hemp in Maryland and advertising for the hemp tour. I really enjoy this part of the internship because not only do I have the creative freedom to create very intriguing social media posts, but I get to see them being posted on the Extension social media pages. I enjoy knowing that the work that I am doing for this internship is being seen by people outside of the internship as well. Since the social media posts have begun, I have had people reach out to me that are genuinely interested in learning more about the information that I am putting out for Extension, and being able to education people about these interesting topics is another thing that has come as an added bonus to the internship which has made this experience even more enjoyable. I’ve learned that I really enjoy information dissemination; the process of learning about new topics and sharing that information with others is something that is really fulfilling to me.
