Personal Growth as an Intern - by Makayla Kret

Here I am hoeing weeds around the sunflowers in the Urban Farming Research Clinic.

While working at Extension, I have uncovered more about myself and my habits. With the projects I have been working on this summer, I have learned more about how I prefer to work and learn. I have discovered that I work well with others to achieve a goal. This week I assisted my mentor, R. David Myers, with maintaining weeds in the Urban Farming Research Clinic. We spent one day hoeing the weeds near the sunflowers since herbicides can be harmful to the plant. We worked together to formulate the amount of herbicide solution needed to maintain the weeds around the pumpkins. This project allowed me to learn hands-on while enjoying time in the field. This experience helped me discover that I enjoy learning hands-on and with others.

During my time with Extension this summer, I have strengthened my time management skills. I learned that I work best when I outline my daily activities rather than looking at everything I need to complete that week. Looking at all the assignments I need to complete in one week can become overwhelming. If I focus more on the tasks I need to complete in one day, I can work better. This skill will not only help me with school, but it will also help me with my career in the future.

Through different tasks I have been working on this summer, I have learned I can excel when working not only in a team but individually as well. I have been working on filing Camp Forms for the 4-H Camp that is taking place in July. By going through each camper’s paperwork and ensuring each child has submitted all required paperwork, the campers are allowed to attend camp. I have been working on this task independently as papers are submitted. This project helped me realize that I can be flexible when needed. I can work with a group or independently to complete any necessary tasks. This internship experience has helped me grow personally, professionally, and academically in such a short time!
