Exciting Projects in Extension - by Makayla Kret

So far, I have worked on many exciting tasks and projects during my time with Extension this summer. My most challenging project has been updating the Anne Arundel County 4-H Fair Book. This task has been challenging due to technical difficulties I experienced while trying to update the document. I used critical thinking many times throughout this project. I needed to use my problem-solving skills to troubleshoot different problems that arose. I was able to work through each problem and finish updating the 4-H Fair Book fully. There were times I thought I needed to create an entirely new document, but I was able to work through technical difficulties and complete the task at hand.

Another task I have been working on during my internship has been organizing the Anne Arundel County Camp paperwork. This task was fun in many ways. For example, I was able to learn how to operate the copier machine which is a skill I will be able to use in the future. I showcased my organizational skills by keeping track of all the camper’s materials. This is an ongoing task I will be working on until camp starts.

I have also been working with my Mentor R. David Myers on the Urban Farming Research Clinic. The pumpkins, popcorn, Indian corn, and Sunflowers have been planted. We are now working on maintaining the weeds with herbicides and hoeing. This project has been very exciting and fun to work on. We plan to have a fall festival with different fun family-friendly activities! This project has been an amazing opportunity to learn hands-on.

I continue to learn every day during this internship. I acquire new and expand upon old skills each day I am working. I can learn hands-on and expand my network within the agriculture industry. I have learned so much about myself and how I learn since I began this internship with Extension!
