Going into the second week of this internship, I can see how my previous jobs and
experiences in education play into being successful in my work. All of my past work experiences have been very laborious, busy jobs where I had to work independently and be self-motivated in order to get work done. From those aspects, I have developed a very strong work ethic where I enjoy being efficient and thorough in the work that I do, and also find it rewarding to get a lot done. The coursework that I have done throughout my two years at UMD is also beginning to play an important role in the work that I am doing for this internship, especially when we go to work in the field. The information that I have learned in soil and nutrient health, plant physiology, and ecology has been extremely beneficial when working with the hemp trial plants. Even past experience with soil mapping technology has been very useful with one of the projects that I have been working on so far.
My overall goal that I will be focusing on through this internship is the application of the knowledge that I gain from a classroom setting to the work that is being done in the field. I want to focus on emphasizing critical thinking and technology to transform that knowledge into technical skills and experience. The intersectionality of coursework and field work is something that I think is vital to being successful in not only this internship, but in any sector of work that I might possibly do.

Along with technology and critical thinking, another one of the core competencies that I have experienced in the past two weeks is teamwork. There is so much collaboration going on at all times in the Extension in many different ways. There is teamwork between researchers at the Wye Center, but also with researchers at extensions in other states; every project that I am involved in has many different hands also involved, from all levels of education and in all different types of positions. In addition to just teamwork, the capacity to have many different people from diverse backgrounds working together on a project exposes the need for so many of the other core competencies, namely communication, equity and inclusion, and professionalism. The ability to work with various groups of people and experience dramatically different professional environments provides me with a wonderful opportunity to learn how to adapt to different work environments and work effectively with different types of people.
The Yuma variety of hemp for the hemp trials. This variety has been growing much larger and stockier which is more beneficial for fiber production
