Busy Week - by Brian Wathen

Walking to the Tomato fields where we took tissue samples of the plants

This past week was a really busy one. We harvested tomatoes and recorded data from our high tunnel for our heirloom tomato trial, we visited farms and took a look at some common plant diseases and took tissue samples from the plants, went to a local vineyard to collect data and spray fungicide for another small trial that is taking place and we set up a field trial for a farmer, where we are trying to find out how to best manage residue on fields by using different chemicals. I went back to the farm to take soil samples in each plot and will do it again as the weeks go on. We also had our second meeting at the Charles County Soil Conservation District where we talked about different soil conservation methods that farmers can put into place to protect their waterways and their fields. I am looking forward to the coming weeks and am excited to learn all that I can through Extension.

I have been paying close attention to the way that I work during my time with Extension and my previous employment. I tend to work better by myself, however I do like to work with others in completing certain tasks. Working with others gives me the chance to interact and take a look at and compare different people’s work ethics. I am a very detail oriented person and a perfectionist in most cases. If directions are given to me, I have a hard time trying to fully comprehend what is being asked, unless directions are given to me step by step. These are some setbacks that I know that I have but I try my hardest to focus on my task so that I can get it done in a timely manner.

With these setbacks, I have learned to keep an open mind and be creative about the way I do things. I like to think outside the box from time to time and illustrate new ways to complete the task at hand. I like to think smarter, not harder, but that isn’t true in most cases. Sometimes I need to work harder to get things done or I might feel discredited for doing something wrong or not fast enough. I am hopeful about learning different ways that I can change some of these setbacks and continue to stay open-minded and motivated throughout the rest of my internship.
